About Kirovsk

The city of Kirovsk (Murmansk region) is a compact in size, but very picturesque city, which is located on the Kola Peninsula 210 km from the city of Murmansk. Kirovsk is one of the centers of skiing in Russia. The city is located right at the foot of the Khibin – the largest mountain range on the peninsula. Two ski resorts operate here – Big Woodyavr (Big Wood) and Kukisvumchorr.

Big Woodyavr (Big Wood) is located on the North and South slopes of Mount Aikuayvenchorr. There are 5 tow lifts, a chairlift, as well as a gondola-chairlift. The highest point on the North Slope is 850 m, on the South – 1,060 m above sea level. The total height difference is 550 m.

Kukisvumchorr is located on the southern slope of the mountain of the same name. There are 3 ski lifts, as well as a baby lift. The highest point of Mount Kukisvumchorr is 890 m above sea level, the elevation difference is 520 m.

The region has developed geological and geological-mineralogical tourism. One of the most popular routes is a visit to the Tietta memorial of the Fersman’s Khibiny research mountain station of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, which burned down during the Second World War and was later rebuilt, and then renamed the modern Kola Science Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Also, tourists are advised to visit the Polar-Alpine Botanical Garden Institute (Polar-Alpine Botanical Gardens), to admire the fabulous Lake Big Wudyavr, which is very picturesque stretches its shores between the mountains of Kirovsk.
